Hi Karla - I am just doing some research and ran across your post. Why is beekeeping not allowed in Washington, DC?
I am just getting interested in this fascinating subject of beekeeping.

That's a great question, bees would be the best addition to the White House, the Obama's could sweeten their organicly grown food with a natural sweetener instead of glucose, or high fruitose, or something else more toxic like Sweet-n-low...
Maybe the reason Washington does not want bees there is because they can catch more flies with something other than honey... it at least rhymes with honey...
Along the lines of "if you can dream it you can do it" take a look at the enlarged White House Garden image here: www.syracuseculturalworkers.com. I do believe those are beehives in the back left of the image!
FINALLY someone noticed the post on honeybees! gotta have those girls for the white house garden. YES, the syracuse cultural workers poster show beehives.
I am not sure why they are not allowed in D.C. but I do know there are secret city beekeepers in the city. NYC is in the middle of trying to legalize beekeeping- more city beekeepers there.
Best of all, the city of CHicago has beehives on top of city hall and sells the honey, they also have a green roof.
Check us out at http://www.PWRBeekeepers.com There is a great link to a CBS news story on our little club. We are in the outer subrubs of DC and volunteered to care for the hives at the White House...
that rare thing that I wonder? that could affect the development of beekeeping in the white house, well if someone knows something we do not have a little?
What is the reason that DC does not allow beekeeping? Seems rather odd. After all the hype over the last two years about "where did the honey bees go?" I am pleased to share that they have returned to my house. A friend of mine gave me some sunflower seeds and BOY do the bees love those! I see them all over the flower garden now as a result. I will surely plant more sunflowers next year in hopes of bringing in even more of bees!
Side note here, is there any scientific research supporting that eating local honey reduces allergies? I heard that if you eat local honey your seasonal allergies will be diminished as a result. Thanks for the education!
